The exercise gives you a starting point for doing cartooning and exaggeration as well as realism: to make it realistic, aim to follow the contour tightly, to make it a cartoon, let things get stretched out. It can be made fun, simple, and quick, covering any material you like. Do this in a sketchbook or on a clipboard while you watch videos, just pausing them to sketch for a minute. Do blind contour sketches to build up the muscle memory you need - it's exactly the same as when you practiced writing letters. Unfortunately, time isn't my best suit as I am currently a computer engineering student so I couldn't try all and choose the best depending on the game I'm making (which has been said to be the perfect formula).
